How Garda town is laid out

Garda’s historic centre and lakeside meet around the harbour and Piazza dei Capitani, at the heart of the Gulf of Garda. The town and its municipality occupy the eastern shore of Lake Garda, and the municipal territory also includes Punta San Vigilio.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Spagna and Calle dei Sottoportici are among the historic centre’s streets. Palazzo dei Capitani stands by the lakefront: the 14th-century Venetian Gothic palace was once the residence of the Capitano del lago. In the old town, Palazzo Fregoso is a 15th-century building.

For a wider look at the area, the one-day route around Garda town brings the town’s sights into a single outing.

The lakeside and town centre

The lakeside and town centre

The lakeside and historic centre give you a compact way to combine a walk by the harbour with the town’s old streets. Piazza dei Capitani is part of this central waterfront area, while Palazzo dei Capitani offers a notable landmark along the lakefront.

Garda’s points of interest also include Punta San Vigilio, Rocca di Garda and Piazza Catullo. The regional tourism portal also identifies Baia delle Sirene, Spiaggia la Cavalla and Spiaggia al Corno as beaches in Garda, so you can pair time in the centre with a visit to one of the area’s lakeside spots.

The port is also a departure point for Navigazione Laghi boats to towns around the lake, including Lazise, Peschiera, Desenzano, Salò, Gardone Riviera, Limone sul Garda, Riva del Garda and Malcesine. Routes and timetables vary, so check them as part of planning your day; the Lake Garda ferry guide covers travel by boat from Garda.

Museums to add to a visit

Museums to add to a visit

Museo Territoriale del Lago di Garda Luigi Carlo Bertamè introduces the lake’s natural and human history alongside local traditions. It is located at the Palazzetto delle Esposizioni in the municipal courtyard, at Lungolago Regina Adelaide 14.

The collection began in 1966, when local teacher Luigi Bertamè started gathering material and objects connected with the area’s traditions and the natural and human history of the lake.

The Comune di Garda gives opening hours of Friday 15:00–18:00, Saturday 10:00–12:30 and 15:00–18:00, and Sunday 15:00–18:00. For information or guided visits, call 0456208406 for Segreteria or 0456208403 for Manifestazioni e Cultura.

Opening hours and visitor arrangements can change, so check the Comune di Garda’s official site before you go. The Museo del Garda visit guide focuses on planning time at the museum.

How do you get around locally?

How do you get around locally?

Garda has local shuttle, bus and boat connections, with the best option depending on where you’re going. The municipal shuttle is free and connects tourist points in the municipality, including Gardacqua and the ATV bus station.

It operates from April to October, between 09:00 and 19:00; daily summer departures run 09:00–12:00 and 16:00–19:00, every 30 minutes. Check the Comune di Garda’s current details before relying on a departure time.

Regular buses connect Garda with Lake Garda resorts, Verona, Valpolicella, Mount Baldo, Peschiera del Garda, Verona’s railway stations and Verona Airport. The port serves Navigazione Laghi boats to lakeside towns. For crossing the lake by car, motorbike or bicycle, a ferry runs between Torri del Benaco and Toscolano Maderno; the crossing takes 20 minutes.

For local visitor information, the I.A.T. Garda office is at Lungolago Regina Adelaide 2, 37016 Garda (VR). The town’s tourism portal links to bus, boat and ferry timetables, which are useful to check when planning connections.

Planning a short stay in Garda

Start in the historic centre and lakeside area, where the harbour, Piazza dei Capitani and old-town streets sit close together. If you want to add the museum, check its opening hours first and plan your visit around them. Then use the port for a lake connection or local bus and shuttle links to reach other points in the municipality.

Friday is the weekly market day in Garda. The municipal shuttle omits its first two stops on market days, Sundays and public holidays, as well as during events taking place there, so check the route details if you’re depending on those stops.
